The Beaches of Assinie
Assinie sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Aby lagoon, east of Abidjan. Ocean beaches, calm lagoon shores and a long sand spit: here is what to know before you go.
Where the beaches of Assinie are
Assinie (officially Assinie-Mafia) lies in the Adiaké department of the Sud-Comoé region, east of Abidjan and close to the Ghanaian border. Sources give between 80 and 94 km by road. The municipality covers 77 km² and had 21,941 inhabitants at the 2021 census.
Between ocean and lagoon: a 15 km sand spit
The eastern part of the municipality is a peninsula about 15 km long and only 100 to 1,000 metres wide, squeezed between the Atlantic Ocean and the Aby lagoon. Luxury villas and paillotes stand along it. The western part, bordered by the ocean alone, is reached by road. The peninsula is reached by car, private boat or pirogue across the lagoon.
At its far end, the mouth of the lagoon is called La Passe. There are no restaurants or hotels there. The two shores feel very different: waves on the ocean side, much calmer water on the lagoon side.
A seaside resort with a long history
The French settled here in 1687 and occupied Fort Saint-Louis from 1701 to 1704. Fort-Joinville was built in 1843, and in 1907 Assinie was the third port of Côte d'Ivoire before Grand-Bassam, Bingerville and Port-Bouët took over. The modern resort took shape later: a Club Méditerranée village opened in 1969 and a second holiday village at Assouindé in 1980. The 1978 film Les Bronzés was shot here.
Best time to visit the beaches of Assinie
The south coast of Côte d'Ivoire has four seasons: a long dry season from December to April, a long rainy season from May to July, a short dry season in August and September, and a short rainy season in October and November. For Abidjan, the same source gives average monthly highs of 27 to 32 °C and lows of 21 to 25 °C, with humidity between 80 and 90 %. The driest months are the best bet for the beach; August and September are a second, shorter window.
Swimming and safety
Do not treat every beach as a swimming pool. A February 2023 report from Assinie warned that heavy swell creates dangerous rip currents, and that foam makes hazards hard to spot from the shore. The same report described an invasion of physalias ("blue bottles"), which are not true jellyfish but cause intense pain and hives, even when stranded and half dry. Sand fleas bite people who lie or sit at the water's edge. The report cites no official instructions, so ask your accommodation about conditions on the day, prefer the lagoon shore for children, and stay away from La Passe, where travellers describe very strong currents.
